Birthday Celebration!!
During my last visit to Paso a Paso, in March, I brought with me
birthday gifts for each of the children. We stored the gifts in plastic
bins and as the year progressed the gifts were given out on each kid's
birthday. The birthday gifts consisted of a drawstring backpack, a
coloring book, crayons or colored pencils, stickers, a toothbrush, and a
small toy. Nothing much, but something fun to receive on their
birthdays.
Later Evita, one of our teachers, shared that each time one of his classmates got their birthday bag he would ask with great excitement "Is it my turn?" or "When is it my turn to get my bag?". The teachers would remind him that his birthday wasn't until October and he would get the saddest look in his eyes.
Finally, after 6-long-months of waiting, he received his bag. He was most excited about the bag itself, since he had been without a backpack for a while. And he repeated multiple times about how he finally had his own coloring book.

Today,
we celebrated the birthday of one of our preschoolers, Daniel López.
Daniel is one of the sweetest preschoolers we have. He is extremely kind
and selfless; always sharing crayons, toys, etc. with his classmates.
After many months of waiting in great anticipation for his birthday to
come around, it finally was his turn to have happy birthday sang to him
and to get his birthday bag. He was grinning ear to ear the entire
time--from getting sung to, to getting a big hug from his classmates, to
seeing what goodies he had in his bag.
